"OWLS" by Kathryn Morris Trotter

"OWLS"

This was one of my favorite paintings to paint!  I wanted to stretch myself while still being true my expression of art.  As an artist, it is important to experiment with what you are really wanting say as opposed to feeling like you have been "trapped" into a certain style or subject that people associate you with.  If we never break the mold, jump, take a chance, allow ourselves to fail, then how will we ever discover anything new and unexpected???  WE WON'T!

I will end with this quote that has been my inspiration for the week....
"In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing you can do is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is noting" Theodore Roosevelt

This is one of my favorite paintings I have painted.  I love the orange, even though it is quite specific. I see this painting bringing life and color to a sun room or a kitchen!  Check it out at Trinity School's Spotlight on Artist market this week!

I just can't get away from these butterflies.  They make me so happy to paint....they are freeing, exciting, and energetic!  When I paint butterflies I feel no inhibitions with my palette, and it is liberating!

"Le Comptoir"
18x24"
by Kathryn Morris Trotter

This scene reminds me of a restaurant where my husband and I dined in Paris when we were engaged.  The restaurant was called "Le Comptoir," however, this painting it is not an exact replica of what the restaurant looks like.  The essence is what I wanted to capture, and I also made a few color adjustments to capture the energy it needed to reflect excitement and life.

I NEVER paint directly from a photograph and render the exact scene that a photo represents.  I could just yawn all day in my studio and eventually fall asleep if I thought I needed to copy a photo.... BOOOOORING!   In my opinion, those types of paintings seem stagnant, lifeless, and frozen in time.  Do you know why I am so in tune with this type of painting??  I used to paint in this way years ago, and I would get so lost in the most ridiculous details that I would loose sight of why I was painting.  I would be exhausted by the end of my painting session, and in the end the only thing I could see was my lack of perfection in recreating a photo.

I am glad I can go into my studio and push all the voices out of my head that tell me my painting needs this or that...I say, it is my painting, and it doesn't have to make sense if I don't want it to.  I can change any color, add any person, animal, building, or whatever I like to make it work!

Shhhhhhh.....This painting is a SURPRISE commission piece.  That is all that I can say, as I don't know who reads my blogs! :0!! The only suggestion for painting this was a plethora of colorful dresses (twist my arm, right??).   It is interesting that the last 5 commission pieces have been surprises.  What a unique gift idea that will be a keepsake for the rest of this person's life?

It is a joy painting for these wives, husbands, and children who have put so much thought and excitement into photos, ideas, and specifics about the painting they want commissioned.  What is even better is the response I receive after the gift has been unveiled.

Thank you to all who have allowed me the opportunity to play such a unique role in your expression of love to your family and friends.  Some of you have not even seen my work in person, nor do I know you on a personal level and some of you, I know quite well...either case, it has been a true joy.

giclee reproductions available at Fine Art Marketplace:

This blog goes out to all of you who have contacted me regarding this piece.  I send my thanks around the states and overseas for purchasing the limited edition giclees of "Dancing in the Rain."  Please know that you have a little piece of me, since you own my art.    My biggest thanks goes out to the owner of the original who allowed me to have this piece transported all the way back to Atlanta so that I could capture the image for reproduction.

"Dancing in the Rain 2" has been one of my most sought after paintings since the beginning of my art career.  Who would have guessed??!  Being the originator of this painting, I obviously would not have created it if I did not LOVE IT!  So, I am not saying that it is not noteworthy of this praise, but I will say that one never knows just which painting is going have such a broad, profound effect.

This piece was painted with as much excitement as it exudes today.  Isn't it ineffable how a painting can encapsulate the energy that the artist possesses in the moment a painting is created and that it retains that energy for a lifetime?   As we look at the masters or any piece of art that speaks to us, we realize that it is the energy that invites us into a moment in time...

ALSO....Check out "DANCING IN THE RAIN 2" in the this season's premier of "DROP DEAD DIVA!"
Our limited edition giclees are being sold at Fine Art Marketplace (see link above).

"The Invitation"

"The Invitation"
40x60" oil on canvas
By Kathryn Morris Trotter

The title of this piece, "The Invitation," piques one's curiosity.  Where are these ladies going and what prestigious event soiree were they invited to? Where are they?  Are they in New York or Paris?  It must be an important event to be so fabulously dressed in the rain...and yes, these fashionistas came prepared.

I just love this painting, and I will miss it when it is no longer hanging in my studio.  Where do I envision these ladies?? I see this piece in a high-end fashion boutique, a New York loft, or potentially a fashion house....although, I wouldn't be surprised if a man ends up purchasing this painting for his wife or secretly for himself.  One would be surprised at how many emails I receive from men who are captivated by these ladies.  They have no shame...I am talking true businessmen who probably eat, live, and breathe football.  I must say..I love it!

"SOIREE II"
24x24" oil on canvas
by Kathryn Morris Trotter

This was a commission piece for a couple who wanted to surprise their daughter for her 21st birthday! How fabulous to start an original art collection at the age of 21!!  Coincidentally, we have the same birthday...how serendipitous! The only request is that I slip their daughter into the painting;0!

This painting was based off of another painting of min that sold a few months ago.   These days, almost 100% of my commission work is based off of paintings that have sold.  As the artist, I don't mind doing something that is similar, but I have to be able to have creative reign and make changes that need to happen as I see fit.   As far as my fashion ladies are concerned, I have to be able to dress them according to the personality of each lady, and it would be an absolute faux pas for my ladies to ever show up in the same dress for a social occasion...hence, you will see some of the same ladies make their way into different paintings but never donned in the same dress.  They have a plethora of dresses, gowns, and outfits to choose from when it comes to a special soiree.  Cheers!

"DAY AT THE BEACH" by Kathryn Morris Trotter

"A DAY AT THE BEACH"
20x30" oil on canvas
by Kathryn Morris Trotter

Tis the season......
There is absolutely nothing better than packing the car until nothing else can possibly fit and heading to the beach for a long, relaxing vacation.  The beach is a place of solitude, rejuvenation, and most of all  it is a place filled with a multitude of memories made over a lifetime.  I could just smell the salt air and hear the ocean crashing as this scene came to life on my canvas.  I could feel the soft sand in between my toes as lathered on the thick paint!  Ahhhhhhh....do I really have to wait until July??

"MAMA" by Kathryn Morris Trotter

"MAMA"
Kathryn Morris Trotter
18x24"
oil on canvas

I am a MOM....

This was a painting that I was inspired to paint while missing my baby Caroline.  Although she has just reached the year mark, I was imagining her in this young toddler stage in life and how I look forward to the journey.  As I painted this painting, I could hear her babbling in the next room with my favorite sitter.  In one sense I wanted to be on the floor immersed into her world, yet on the other hand I was savoring the peace and solitude of my light filled studio where I can create whatever I want.
The balance of being a mom and an a professional artist can be quite complex.  My most important job is being a mom without a doubt, but I think most artists would agree that the energy of exiting ideas are hard to contain.  They necessitate immediate attention, lest they be gone forever.  My greatest pieces are usually born  when that explosive, creative energy overtakes me, and I jump into my paint clothes and grab the brush.  However, I do accept that there will be a time for more of those moments later on.  My discipline exercise for now is to schedule my painting time and accept that "scheduled painting," which seems like an oxymoron, is better than not painting at all!

"Daddy's Girls II" by Kathryn Morris Trotter

"Daddy's Girls II"
Kathryn Morris Trotter

This was a commission piece for a woman who is pregnant with her third little girl.  She wanted to surprise her husband with a painting of his three little girls.  This was a joy to paint as I got to know the little personalities of these precious girls during the painting process.  I just imagined the baby tugging on the middle daughter without any regard to boundaries, the middle child enjoying her baby sister, and the oldest just staying right by daddy's side.
